İlçe toprakları orta yükseklikte engebeli arâziden meydana gelir. Batısında Hezanlı Dağı, güneyinde Nurhak Dağları, doğusunda Akçababa Dağları, kuzeyinde Leylek Dağı yer alır. İlçe topraklarını Tohma Suyu ve Balıklıtohma Çayı sular. Akarsu vâdilerinde küçük düzlükler vardır. Ekonomik yapısı: Ekonomisi tarıma dayalıdır. Başlıca tarım ürünleri, buğday, şekerpancarı, nohut ve patatestir. Sulanabilen arâzide sebzecilik ve meyvecilik yapılır. En çok dut ve kayısı yetiştirilir. Hayvancılık ekonomik açıdan önemli gelir kaynağıdır. En çok koyun ve kıl keçisi beslenir. İlçe topraklarında krom ve demir mâdeni çıkarılır. İlçe Merkezi: İlçe merkezi, Malatya-Kayseri-Ankara karayolu üzerinde yer alır. İl merkezine 110 km mesafededir. Çok eski târihe sâhiptir. Eti ve Sümerlere âit eserler vardır. Eski yerleşim merkezi ilçe yakınındaki Zengibar Kalesinin içinde idi. 1070’lerden sonra kalenin eteğine yerleşen halk bugünkü Dârende’yi kurmuşlardır. Belediyesi 1868’de kurulmuştur.
